How To Make a Custom Page in Your Favorite WordPress Template

custom page

Did you know that approximately 60 million websites use WordPress templates? This is a clear example of how beneficial it is to use WordPress for your website, one of the main reasons is the ability to create a custom page.

In most WordPress templates, you can have multiple posts and pages all with the same layout, under the same “theme”. However, what if you want to customize your page and change up the design a bit?

But the problem is, the last thing you want to do is have to learn the confusing language of coding just to change up your website pages.

So how can you create a custom template without spending a ton of money on a professional designer or having to learn code?

Thankfully, we did that research for you! Keep on reading to learn how to set up a custom page, easily!

Let’s get started.

What Is a WordPress Custom Page?

For most WordPress templates, you have a general theme that is pre-designed for all of your pages. Meaning that every single post and page will look exactly the same by using a template file called page.php.

This file applies to each and every page you make in your WordPress dashboard. This can feel redundant at times if you want to spice up each page a bit differently and make them unique.

In the past, you would have to understand coding and HTML in order to add some of your own flavors to your pages. Thankfully, that is not the case anymore as WordPress has now created new theme generators (round of applause).

This can be done without any experience, and should not take any longer for each page.

Why Would You Want a Custom Page?

Let’s say you own a restaurant, without a custom page, you cannot add your hours of operation or even your menu without it looking bland and unoriginal.

If you sell products online, why would you want your products layout page to look the same as your “about” or “contact” page? You want it to have more flavor to feel more attracting to visitors.

No matter what your business is, you will benefit from designing your own custom pages.

Start With the Basics, Your Theme

Unlike other sites which solely require HTML, WordPress uses template files written in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and PHP. They originally started as a blogging platform, but now they are known as a content management system with a lot more perks.

First thing after you purchase your domain name is to purchase a theme. It does not matter what you use for your theme, all that matters is that you have one and like the general concept of it.

We will use Beaver Themer by Beaver Builder, one of WordPress’s best page-design plugins to demonstrate how to make your custom page. This way you can still drag and drop a custom page without needing to know the coding side of it.

Install both plugins, then choose a theme that works with Beaver Builder. You want BB to have access to the entire page (end to end), so go into your admin panel then:

  • Find appearance
  • Then customize page
  • Go to Layout and Sidebars tab
  • Select “No Sidebar”
  • Publish your changes

Now you do not have an annoying sidebar interfering with your custom page design masterpiece!

Know Your Options First

As you plan your custom page design, it is important to know all the options you have with Beaver Themer.

Module

This is a specific item that contains information like galleries, text blocks, custom titles, and tables.

Template

This is where you can create the entire page layout with multiple options of different modules, rows, and columns.

Columns

Columns are modules that are aligned vertically, to keep your content organized in a linear fashion.

All you have to do is edit a page in Beaver Builder, then click the add button, and start dragging and dropping all the above options to start designing your page.

Getting To the Custom Page

Go to pages, then add new and select page builder with Beaver Builder. If this is your first custom page, we suggest selecting a template to start with to get some inspiration to understand what the layout could look like. You will be able to customize this template as much as you want.

Once that template is loaded, hover your mouse over an area you want to change and select the little wrench icon. Then you can change the row layouts to as many columns as you think you need in your row. Remember you can change this later.

You will also get different options for color, text size, font, graphics, background, margin, etc.

Adding the Elements

After you have played around with your rows, it’s time to get the fun part started, the elements. This is where your custom page really comes alive.

Drag and drop new elements to your row such as images, sliders, buttons, audio, video, titles, etc.

Remember to save as you are going along so that you are not losing any of your hard work designing. Once you save, Beaver Builder will display a popup with options. This is where you can actually duplicate this custom page as a new template and use it for another page design or even another website of yours.
